Common tax registration questions

Answers to the questions taxpayers ask most about tax IDs and registration.

Written by Cross River Administrator

1. What is a tax ID?

A Tax ID is the unique identifier used to identify a taxpayer within the tax administration system.
It helps connect your tax-related activities and records to your taxpayer identity.
Think of it as: Your tax identity → Your Tax ID
Keep it safe and use it when required for your tax-related dealings.

2. How do I know if I already have a tax ID?

Before trying to create another taxpayer identity, check first.

The current national Tax ID system provides a facility for taxpayers to retrieve or verify an existing Tax ID using the applicable identification details.

For individuals,

The Tax ID framework is linked to the NIN, BVN, PHONE NUMBER, and email.

For corporate entities

It is linked to relevant CAC records.

Already have one? You don't need to create another.
CHECK FIRST. REGISTER SECOND.

3. Can I have more than one tax ID?

No.

Your Tax ID is intended to be unique.

If you already have one, don't create another simply because:

  • You changed your address;

  • You changed your phone number;

  • You changed your employer;

  • You started a new job;

  • You updated your information; or

  • You encountered a problem with your existing record.

Update or correct your record instead.One taxpayer. One tax identity.

4. Do I need to register if I already have a tax ID?

If you already have a valid Tax ID, you should not treat yourself as a brand-new taxpayer simply because you want to use a tax service.

Your first step should be to confirm your existing record. If you discover that your details need correction or updating, follow the appropriate update or support process.

5. What if my phone number or email has changed?

No panic.

That's exactly why taxpayer information can be updated.
If your contact information changes, update your taxpayer record with the new information through the available official channel.
Don't leave your taxpayer profile carrying yesterday's contact details.

New number? → Update it.

New email? → Update it.
Keep your record current.

6. What if I move to a new address?

Moving houses doesn't mean you need a new Tax ID.
Your address may change. Your tax identity doesn't. Update the relevant taxpayer information through the appropriate channel.
And remember the important statutory rule:

Changes in taxpayer particulars should be notified to the relevant tax authority within 30 days of the change. So don't wait until you need a tax service before discovering that your record still carries your old address.

7. What if I get married or change my name?

Congratulations!
But remember to update your taxpayer information where the change affects your registered particulars.

If your name has legally changed, ensure that the relevant supporting evidence is available where required.

Life event → Update your record. And importantly:
A change of name does not mean you should create a second Tax ID.

8. What if I change my job?

Changing employers does not automatically mean you need a new Tax ID.
Your taxpayer identity remains your taxpayer identity.
Where your employment information forms part of your taxpayer record and has changed, update the relevant information as required.

New employer? Update your details.
Don't create another taxpayer identity.

9. What if I start a business?

Starting a business can create new tax obligations and may require appropriate registration or updates depending on your circumstances and the nature of the business.
Don't simply assume that your personal taxpayer record automatically covers every business obligation.

Starting a business? Check what registration and tax obligations apply to that business.
And where your taxpayer particulars need to change, keep them updated.

10. What if my business information changes?

Businesses don't stay frozen either.
A business may:

  • Change its address;

  • Change contact information;

  • Change relevant business details;

  • Change its operating circumstances; or

  • Have other changes affecting its taxpayer particulars.

Where applicable, those changes should be communicated to the relevant tax authority within the required timeframe.

Business changed? Keep the tax record moving with it.

11. What documents do I need for tax registration?

The exact information and supporting evidence required can depend on:

  • Whether you're an individual or a business;

  • Your circumstances;

  • The registration route; and

  • What the relevant tax authority requires for verification.

You may be asked for information such as identification, contact details, address, employment or business information.
Supporting evidence may also be requested to confirm the information provided.

The golden rule: Have accurate information and genuine supporting documents ready.

Never provide false information simply to get through registration.

12. What if I don't have every document with me?

Don't guess.
Don't enter information you know is incorrect.
And don't use somebody else's information.
Instead, check what the registration process currently requires and obtain the appropriate information or supporting evidence before proceeding where necessary.

Accuracy first. Speed second.

A few extra minutes preparing correctly can save you much more time fixing an error later.

13. What if I entered the wrong information?

First:
DON'T PANIC.

Mistakes can happen.

If you discover that information on your taxpayer record is incorrect, use the appropriate correction or support process provided by the relevant tax authority.
Do not create another taxpayer profile to “start again.”Correct the existing record where possible.

14. What if my NIN or other identity details don't match?

Stop and check the information carefully.
A mismatch between your taxpayer information and an underlying identity record can create verification problems.

Don't randomly change details just to make the system accept them.
Where the underlying identity record itself needs correction, follow the correction process of the authority responsible for that record.

MATCH → VERIFY → CORRECT

Not:

GUESS → SUBMIT → REGRET

15. How long does tax registration take?

The time can vary depending on:

  • The registration channel;

  • Verification requirements;

  • Whether the information supplied is complete and accurate;

  • Whether there are inconsistencies requiring resolution; and

  • System or administrative processing.

The best way to avoid unnecessary delays? Get your information right the first time.

Incomplete or inconsistent information can turn a simple process into an unnecessarily frustrating one.

16. What if I cannot complete my registration?

Don't abandon the process.
First, check:
Are all required fields completed?
Are your identification details correct?
Does your information match your supporting records?
Have you provided the required information or evidence?
Is there an error message explaining what needs attention?
If the problem continues, use the appropriate official support channel.
Stuck doesn't mean finished. It simply means:
STOP → CHECK → FIX → CONTINUE.

17. Do I need to register again if I move to another state?

Not simply because you moved.
A change of location does not automatically mean you should create another Tax ID.
However, a change in residence, employment, business activity or other circumstances may affect your tax administration and should be properly reflected where required.
Don't duplicate your tax identity. Update the relevant information and follow the applicable tax requirements.

18. Can I register or manage my tax information online?

Digital tax administration is increasingly making registration and taxpayer services accessible online.
The current CRIRS taxpayer self-service platform provides functions including:

  • My Profile

  • Self Tax Filing

  • Payments

  • Tax Clearance

  • Tax Wallet

  • Refunds

  • Assessments

  • Credit Notes

Availability of particular functions may depend on the taxpayer and the service being accessed.

The goal? Less running around.
More self-service.
More control.
More convenience.

19. Is my tax information safe?

Your taxpayer information is important and should be treated carefully.
Use official tax platforms and authorised channels.
Be particularly careful with anyone who asks for:

Your password

  • Your PIN

  • Your one-time authentication code

  • Log-in credentials

  • Other confidential security information

Simply because they claim they can help with registration.

Never surrender control of your identity just because someone says, “I can help you.”

20. What if I think I should have a tax ID but cannot find it?

Don't immediately register again.
First, try to retrieve or verify your existing Tax ID. If you cannot resolve the issue, use the appropriate official support channel for assistance.

Remember:

Missing your Tax ID is a reason to investigate—not a reason to create a duplicate.

21. What is the 30-day rule?

This is one number worth remembering.
Under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, a taxable person is required to notify the relevant tax authority within 30 days of a change in their particulars.
So:
Something changes? COUNT 30.
Then? NOTIFY AND UPDATE.
Don't make “I'll do it later” your tax strategy.

22. What is the biggest mistake I can make during registration?

Trying to rush through it without checking your information.
A wrong:

  • Name;

  • Date of birth;

  • NIN;

  • Address;

  • Phone number;

  • Email;

  • Business detail; or

  • Other taxpayer information

can create problems later.
Slow down enough to get it right. Remember

CHECK BEFORE YOU CLICK.

23. What if I still have a question?

That's okay.
Tax administration can sometimes involve circumstances that are unique to you.

If your question isn't answered here, don't guess.
Use the appropriate official support channel or contact the relevant tax authority for clarification.

The smartest taxpayer isn't the one who knows everything. It's the one who knows when to ask.
